Macron Bad; But What About America?

Americans need to be more self-critical when examining Macron’s comments.

President Emmanuel Macron of France made the headlines during his recent visit to Beijing after reiterating his calls for European strategic autonomy. Giving an interview with Politico Europe, he stated that the “worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on [Taiwan policy] and take our cue from the U.S. rhythm and a Chinese overreaction.” China hawks in the United States and Europe, including France, duly criticized his remarks and offered different explanations. But one explanation yet to be made is whether U.S. policies are a factor driving Macron to Beijing’s arms.

The reasons offered for Macron’s conduct are largely recycled from the past—because they are correct. Calling for strategic autonomy coming from a Gaullist nation and a Gaullist president is to be expected. After all, France has withdrawn its forces from NATO twice under De Gaulle and kicked NATO off its soil once.
